Looking in the mirror I like to think I know
How the moon feels in its sick yellow glow
And the temptation is so strong to shut my eyes
Or at least to look away and not ‘see through darkly.’
I know that when I close my eyes it seems to me
That the world disappears…
And I wonder if you all run and hide
At the exact moment I close my eyes,
Because your voices seem a little distant,
Maybe that is merely my intent—
To shut out all that is you:
Your new hair-do
and all your talks of love and trouble
they’re just messages in bottles
Washed upon the shore of my eye-lids;
And this tan sand fades into the blue
of seas and the hue of the deep sky,
and the air is so warm that it is
no longer cool to ask “Why?”
So I shut my ears against the din,
and against the sight
of myself
I shut my eyes.
