Silent sifts the shifting mist
Like a blanket covering the town;
With winds of knowing list
The rain comes sweeping down.
There is no more thunder
Or flashes of light before peals.
Men skate about and blunder
Hid by heaven's great wheels.
Rising waves and ancient braves
Are ghosts that rise in blood,
But the times are a-changing too late
And good men drown in the Texas flood.
